Autumn on the Isle of Wight is a truly magical time, offering breathtaking landscapes, vibrant colours, and crisp fresh air perfect for exploring. With over half our countryside recognised as an Isle of Wight National Landscape (formerly known as Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty) and our whole island, including our waters, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, there’s something for everyone as Autumn brings a spectacular show of colour to our island. As the leaves turn, the Isle of Wight transforms into a haven for walking enthusiasts, with scenic trails winding through woodlands, coastal paths, and countryside. Autumn on the Isle of Wight is also a fantastic season for spotting local wildlife, with red squirrels and migratory birds making appearances across our island. There are a variety of Isle of Wight Autumn events, celebrating everything from Halloween, arts and our annual Autumn Walking Festival. After a day of walking, unwind in one of our island’s many cosy pubs, where roaring fires and hearty food awaits. Whether you're here for the scenery, the events, or the peace and quiet, Autumn on the Isle of Wight promises a truly unforgettable escape.
Crisp, clear days in Autumn are made for getting out and about. With over 500 miles of pathways, including 68 miles of coastal paths, there’s always a hidden gem waiting to be discovered. Whether on foot or by bike, bright Autumn days are perfect for exploring.
For a woodland adventure, take in the beauty of the changing colours in the forests. Known as Bicycle island, our island is fully geared up for those travelling on two wheels. You can bring your bike or hire one locally, including electric bikes for the hills! There are routes for all levels, from off-road bridleways to purpose-made tracks along former railway lines. With sunset arriving earlier in Autumn, there’s plenty of time to then enjoy the clear, starry skies.

There’s plenty of wildlife to spot on our island in Autumn. If you’re lucky, you might even spot one of the locals - a red squirrel! Some of the best spots to spot them include Borthwood Copse in Sandown, Parkhurst Forest in Newport and Brighstone Forest, the island’s largest woodland. Autumn is also prime bird migration season. Pack your binoculars and a flask of tea and head to Newtown National Nature Reserve and see what you find.
If you encounter a rainy day, the Isle of Wight offers plenty of indoor Autumn activities for kids and toddlers. Family-friendly attractions and activities include the Isle of Wight Bus and Coach Museum, Tapnell Farm, Brading Roman Villa, Amazon World, Butterfly World, to name but a few.
