The Isle of Wight is a top location for trail and road runners alike. With over 500 miles of public footpaths and 200 miles of cycle tracks, byways and bridleways, there are a plethora of both on and offroad routes for all difficulties and distances.
From a weekly Parkrun 5k to the 100km coastal path, there are routes for everyone.
We’ve collaborated with West Wight Sports and Community Centre who run the Isle of Wight Festival of Running, to give you 12 of the best.
Short routes are often the seen to be the easiest, but when you factor in the dramatic scenery of the Island, “simple 5k” can be quite taxing and a good workout. A great way to start the day, these routes vary in skill level and elevation.
A variation of terrains and elevations, these 10k routes favour stamina and endurance. Taking around 1.5 hours, they can be run no matter the time of day.
For those who need more than 10km to get their running fix, these mixed terrain routes should take between 2.5 – 7 hours to complete.
A mixture of 5k and 10k routes, these are all largely on-road routes with the odd small section of footpath. Ideal for first time runners or those without trail running experience.
A mixture of 5k and 10k routes, these are all largely off-road routes with the odd small, paved section. Ideal for more experienced runners and those wishing for more dramatic scenery.
These routes contain large sections of both on and offroad running. Best for experienced runners who are used to adapting their running to terrain changes.
The Isle of Wight is easy to access as a foot passenger and once you arrive you’ll find it just as easy to get around. Red Funnel, Wightlink and Hovertravel offer high-speed services for foot passengers and each of our island's terminals has excellent onward travel links by bus. If you’re travelling to Ryde, you’ll also be able to explore the east side of our island by train directly from the Pier Head. Visit our sustainable travel page for further information.
