There’s no better time than spring to make unforgettable memories you’ll cherish for a lifetime. The Isle of Wight’s mild temperature makes late February to early May the perfect time to explore – particularly if beautiful scenery, fun-filled activities and peace and quiet are at the top of your holiday wishlist.
With an abundance of places to visit and stunning landscapes to explore, here’s our selection of must-do activities during your Isle of Wight spring getaway.
With over 70 miles of stunning coastal paths, cliffs, woodland, beaches and forests, there’s never a shortage of breathtaking natural beauty to discover. And spring is when the Island really comes to life. Take a stroll from coast to countryside and witness the Island’s unique flora and fauna begin to bloom while the first buds awaken from their winter slumber. Wherever you look, you’re in for a truly magical experience!
Whether you’re a keen hiker, relaxed wanderer or curious explorer, dig out your walking boots and join us between the 11th and 19th May 2024 for the Walking Festival. With an abundance of routes to suit all fitness levels and abilities, you can enjoy a guided tour through the Island’s stunning landscape, taking in views of the thriving wildlife and rich heritage as you clock up the steps.
Prefer to travel on two wheels! Not a problem. The Island’s home to over 200 miles of cycle tracks, byways and bridleways perfectly suited for beginners, seasoned cyclists and everyone in between. Pick a route and see where it takes you.
Make the most of the Island’s unique microclimate by diving into the Island’s clear waters. Why not don your wetsuit and hop onto a paddleboard to explore hidden caves, inlets and the Island’s breathtaking coastal areas – all at your own pace. If you’re feeling confident, you can even paddle around the world-famous Needles and Lighthouse. You won’t get a more spectacular view than that.
There are plenty of places to explore by kayak, too. Compton and Freshwater are two of the most popular kayaking beaches, boasting some of the Island’s finest coastal scenery. Or if surfing’s more your thing, head to the east of the Island, where you’ll find sandy shores and crashing waves big enough to test your mettle. Once you’ve put yourself through your paces, why not see if you can find a dinosaur fossil or two before you head to your next activity?
From the tiniest tots to the fussiest teens, the whole family will be spoilt for choice with a host of fun spring activities to enjoy. Adventure fans will love spending the day meeting life-sized dinosaurs at Dinosaur Isle, and losing themselves in the land of imagination at Blackgang Chine.
Open 7 days a week during February Half Term, Tapnell Farm Park will provide the whole family with so much to see and do. There are go-karts, jumping pillows, trim trails, sledge slides and straw barn fun, plus super cute animals in the paddocks and animal barn!
You’ll be surprised at the amount of unusual creatures that live on the Isle of Wight, too. Get a taste of the Amazon Jungle at Amazon World, see alpacas and llamas close-up at West Wight Alpacas, and visit the 100+ rescue donkeys and Shetland ponies that call the Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary their home. And no holiday to the Island’s complete without a trip to Monkey Haven – the award-winning primate rescue centre.
Re-opening in time for February Half-Term, Sandham Gardens is the ideal place to relax and enjoy quality time with friends and family. With a wide range of exciting activities to enjoy including Sandham Skynets: The Big Bounce, Sandham Karts and Dino Islands: A Golf Adventure!
No visit to the Isle of Wight is complete without a trip to The Needles. Take a ride on the Chairlift, over steep multi-coloured sand cliffs with incredible views of the Needles Rocks and Lighthouse.
No matter what you do, the entire family will leave the Island with warm hearts and treasured memories.
Whether you have children or are treating your mum, nan, daughter or friend to a wonderful day out, there’s nowhere better to spoil them rotten than on the Isle of Wight.
Take a wander through the blossoming spring flowers in Mottistone Gardens before enjoying a scrumptious afternoon tea in the charming tea shop. Or for freshly made scones and cakes against the backdrop of history, the Needles Battery offers spectacular views of the Island within a traditional 1940s setting.
With house tours re-opening in spring, why not head to Farringford House, the former family home of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Farringford is now fully restored and furnished to much as it would have been in Tennyson’s day, and includes important artefacts original to the household. You can then finish your visit off with a walk around the award-winning walled garden.
Have a Sunday sleepover and two-course dinner at Seaview Hotel, or treat your leading lady to a relaxing spa day at the Lakeside Park Hotel and Spa before enjoying the finest local cuisine overlooking the lake.
For an extra special Mother’s Day treat, head to the Isle of Wight Pearl, where your mum can pick her own oyster and watch as it’s opened to reveal a beautiful pearl for her to cherish forever. Afterwards, take in the unmissable cliff-top views over the English Channel at the historic Brighstone Venue and enjoy a light lunch in the café.
Feeling inspired? Then start planning your spring trip now. Whatever you decide to do, it couldn’t be easier to get to the Isle of Wight by car, passenger ferry and hovercraft. There are excellent links to the connecting ferry ports, too, giving you the option to travel by train from anywhere in the UK.
