Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds and spirit of wartime Britain at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s spectacular 1940s Experience. This much-loved annual event transforms the heritage railway into a bustling 1940s scene filled with live entertainment, vintage fashion, military displays and nostalgic steam train journeys. Designed for the whole family to enjoy, the event captures the atmosphere of Britain during the 1940s and offers an unforgettable day out on the Isle of Wight.
Nostalgic journey into the 1940s
You are invited to enjoy the music, fashion and culture of the wartime era as Havenstreet Station comes alive with vintage entertainment and historic displays. From the moment you arrive, you’ll be transported back to the days of the Home Front, where steam trains, military vehicles and period costumes recreate the atmosphere of 1940s Britain. The event celebrates the resilience and spirit of the era, combining heritage, entertainment and nostalgia in one unique experience.
Dressing up in 1940s clothing is positively encouraged (don’t worry if you don’t want to!), with many embracing the occasion in vintage dresses, military uniforms and classic wartime fashion.
Live music
Music plays a central role in the 1940s Experience, with live performances taking place throughout the weekend. You can enjoy nostalgic tunes and wartime favourites performed on the E.N.S.A stage, helping recreate the sounds that lifted spirits during the war years.
The event regularly welcomes talented vintage performers, including the return of entertainer Andy Eastwood, known for bringing the charm and humour of George Formby to life, alongside the captivating vocals of Amanda Ray.
Historic vehicles and wartime displays
Throughout the weekend you can explore an impressive collection of military vehicles, and wartime displays. From classic army trucks and jeeps to fascinating period displays, the 1940s Experience offers a glimpse into wartime Britain and military history.
One of the highlights is the opportunity to see the legendary Spitfire, with the possibility of a spectacular flypast adding to the excitement of the weekend.
Ride the steam trains
No visit to the 1940s Experience would be complete without travelling on the Isle of Wight Steam Railway’s beautifully restored steam trains. You can enjoy unlimited journeys throughout the day, travelling in Victorian and Edwardian carriages hauled by magnificent steam locomotives through the stunning Isle of Wight countryside.
