Sir Robert Holmes - The Swashbuckling, Action-Packed Life of an Intrepid Cava at Carisbrooke Castle
Discover the remarkable and often controversial life of Sir Robert Holmes during this fascinating evening talk at Carisbrooke Castle. Against extraordinary odds, Holmes survived the English Civil War before spending four years at sea alongside Prince Rupert, fighting for the Royalist cause and enduring shipwrecks and capture by hostile forces.
Following the Restoration, Holmes became a trusted ally of King Charles II, but his bold actions at sea helped spark two wars with the Dutch. In one famous engagement, he destroyed 150 enemy ships in a single action. Appointed Captain-Governor of the Isle of Wight, Holmes held the position for 24 years, amassing considerable wealth and making Yarmouth his home, where he was later laid to rest beneath an impressive marble monument in the town church.
This engaging talk offers a unique insight into one of the Isle of Wight's most influential historical figures. Advance booking is essential as places are limited. Tickets are £10, with all proceeds supporting the work of Carisbrooke Castle Museum. Gates open between 6.15pm and 6.25pm, with the talk beginning promptly at 6.30pm.
