About
On Friday 26th July we welcome the return of Woodstock Festival hero Barry Melton and David Bennett Cohen, founding members of Country Joe and the Fish, one of the most influential psychedelic groups that emerged from San Francisco during the 1960s. The band were a sensation at Woodstock Festival in 1969 - in front of half a million people – and were an integral part of the "Woodstock" film. Their first album "Electric Music For The Mind And Body" is acknowledged as the finest debut album of the genre. Barry's lead guitar was nothing less than incendiary, pinned by David Bennett Cohen's unique keyboard playing.
In his last ever interview the late great John Peel said…… "My favourite album of that era really was – and remains – Country Joe and the Fish's 'Electric Music For The Mind Of Body'"
When Barry Melton returns to Dimbola, David Bennett Cohen will be alternating between on keyboards and guitar - this will be the very the first time they've played together in the U.K since the 1970's sharing the bill with Bob Marley and The Wailers!
Apart from Barry "The Fish" Melton on lead vocals and guitar David Bennett Cohen will alternate between keys and guitar with Rob Beckinsale, ex It's A Beautiful Day, who tours with Greg Douglass from The Steve Miller Band, as does bass guitarist Steve Browning who's also an ex member of The Pretty Things. The Canadian guitarist Natalie Martel is on rhythm guitar, and on drums we have local Portsmouth legend Chris Hughes.
Of the original Country Joe & The Fish, only Barry Melton and David Bennett Cohen are still performing, Country Joe McDonald retired in 2007, and bassist Bruce Barthol, who played at Dimbola on many occasions, sadly passed away last year, preceded by drummer Gary "Chicken" Hirsh who died three years ago.
This is a unique opportunity to see a true band of living legends – it may never happen again!
Advance tickets £12 are available online here via Paypal or you can purchase from Dimbola by phoning 01983 756814.
The event starts at 7pm (doors 6:30pm) and will be in the Tearoom. It should finish between 9 and 9:30pm.
