As you watch the yachts pass through the narrow channel between Yarmouth and the New Forest, you will understand why Henry VIII built this, his final fortress. Commanding the mouth of the Solent since 1547, Yarmouth was the first Arrowhead Castle in Britain to defend the western end of the Solent against invasion fleets. 

Yarmouth Castle fulfilled an effective role as a coastal fortification until the end of the Napoleonic War (1803–15), and continued to have an intermittent military role in Victorian times, and during the First and Second World Wars.
