In addition to hosting two of the oldest parades in England the Isle of Wight boasts the highest number of carnivals per head of population in the whole of the UK!

Across the years Isle of Wight towns have fiercely competed with each other to host the biggest and brightest parades through their streets. There are more than 15 summer and 6 winter carnival events taking place across the Island every year, with a mixture of daytime and illuminated shows attracting large crowds of visitors and locals. Ryde Carnival, is reputed to be the oldest in England, dating back to Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee in 1887, with Sandown following closely behind only a couple of years later.

Another busy summer season kicked off last weekend in Newport, and continues this Saturday 26th July with Sandown Carnival, which will be celebrating its 125th anniversary in style - promising its biggest and best event yet, with a whole day of entertainment and celebration taking place throughout the day, culminating in a costume and float parade starting along the Esplanade in the evening.

One of the most popular spectacles for Isle of Wight carnivals are the illuminated parades which take place “after dark” once the main carnival day has taken place. This is when the parades really get the chance to shine with revellers lining the towns’ streets until late in the evening to watch the lit processions.

If you are visiting the Isle of Wight this summer we recommend you try and make it along to at least one of the carnival parades – you won’t be disappointed!
