Experience world-class art in the heart of Newport on the Isle of Wight with the National Gallery's Art On Your Doorstep trail. This unique outdoor exhibition transforms the Isle of Wight's county town into an open-air gallery, bringing some of the world's most celebrated paintings into everyday public spaces.
Running through Newport's historic streets, squares, alleyways and harbourside, the trail features 18 life-size reproductions of masterpieces from the National Gallery's collection. Free to enjoy and fully accessible, it offers you a new way to explore Newport while discovering remarkable works of art in unexpected locations.
The artwork will be on display until October 2026.
Art On Your Doorstep is a major national touring project from the National Gallery, designed to bring famous artworks beyond traditional gallery walls and into communities across the UK. Newport is one of only a handful of locations selected to host the exhibition, highlighting the town's strong sense of identity, heritage and community spirit.
Each artwork has been reproduced at its original size and displayed in a detailed replica frame, allowing visitors to appreciate the paintings up close. The outdoor setting offers a different way to engage with art, encouraging people to pause, look closely and discover details that might otherwise go unnoticed.
The trail has been delivered through the Shaping Newport partnership, a collaboration between the Isle of Wight Council, Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council and the Newport Business Association. The initiative aims to enhance Newport while celebrating the town's rich character and cultural offer.

The Art On Your Doorstep trail has been carefully designed along a one-mile route, making it accessible to as many people as possible. Along the way, you’re guided through some of Newport's most distinctive and historic areas.
The route takes in the bustling town centre, traditional alleyways, historic squares and the picturesque harbourside. By placing artworks throughout the town, the trail encourages you to explore beyond the main shopping streets and discover hidden corners of Newport that you may not have visited before.
Many of the paintings have been chosen specifically to reflect the character, atmosphere or surroundings of their location, creating a meaningful connection between the artwork and the place in which it is displayed.

When following the trail you will encounter reproductions of famous works by some of history's greatest artists. Among the featured paintings are Claude Monet's The Water-Lily Pond, Vincent van Gogh's Sunflowers, Jan van Eyck's Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife, Pierre-Auguste Renoir's The Umbrellas and Gustav Klimt's Portrait of Hermine Gallia.
The trail also includes two celebrated works by J.M.W. Turner displayed at Newport Harbour, alongside paintings by artists including Hans Holbein the Younger, Rachel Ruysch, Édouard Manet, George Bellows, Henri Rousseau and Pieter de Hooch.
The artworks have been selected by local community groups and a local school, helping to ensure the exhibition reflects Newport's people, places and stories. This community-led approach makes the trail feel deeply connected to the town.
A key aim of Art On Your Doorstep is to make art accessible to everyone by bringing world-famous paintings into outdoor public spaces. The life-size reproductions allow you to view the artworks at close range.
The trail is free to enjoy and easy to navigate. Whether you're an art enthusiast, a family looking for an enjoyable day out, or simply exploring Newport for the first time, the trail offers an engaging experience for all ages.
Art On Your Doorstep offers a wonderful way to experience Newport's heritage, culture and community spirit in a single walk. Combining internationally renowned artworks with the town's historic streets and waterfront setting, the trail creates a memorable visitor experience that is both educational and enjoyable.
Whether you're spending a few hours in Newport or making it part of a wider Isle of Wight itinerary, this free outdoor exhibition invites you to slow down, explore and discover art in the everyday.
Follow the trail, uncover hidden details within the paintings and enjoy a unique cultural journey through the heart of Newport.
