Make tracks for a family day out this May Half Term at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, where steam train rides, vintage amusements and plenty of family fun await. Running from 23 May – 31 May, this special event combines the nostalgia of a traditional steam railway with a great day out for all ages.
Step back in time
Climb aboard beautifully restored Victorian and Edwardian carriages and enjoy a nostalgic steam train journey through our island countryside. You can explore the Railway’s heritage attractions, including the Train Story Discovery Centre and museum, where more than 150 years of railway history comes to life.
Family fun for the half term holidays
Perfect for families looking to make the most of the school holidays and Bank Holiday weekend, this event offers a relaxed and entertaining day out with steam train rides, heritage displays and plenty to discover around the station. Younger visitors can also enjoy the onsite playground while parents unwind with refreshments from the café and restaurant.
Children’s activities
There’s even more family fun to enjoy during the May Half Term celebrations, with special children’s activities taking place throughout the event. Young explorers can take part in a Treasure Hunt around the station grounds, following clues as they discover hidden corners of the Railway, while creative minds can get stuck into a variety of Arts & Crafts activities designed to keep little ones entertained during their visit. Perfect for adding even more adventure to a day at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway.
Bank Holiday weekend activities
The Bank Holiday weekend brings even more excitement to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway, with extra entertainment for the whole family to enjoy. Step back in time with vintage amusements offering classic fairground fun throughout Sunday 24 May and Monday 25 May, alongside spectacular circus shows from Jason Maverick taking place at 11.45am and 2.45pm on both days. On Monday 25 May, there will be live performances from talented young musicians from the Chiltern Music Academy, appearing twice at the Whistle Stop Café between 12.30pm and 3.30pm, adding the perfect soundtrack to a memorable Bank Holiday day out.
NSRA Hot Rod Fun Run
Car enthusiasts won’t want to miss the exciting NSRA Hot Rod Fun Run arriving at the Isle of Wight Steam Railway on Tuesday 26 May. The spectacular event will see an impressive display of custom hot rods, classic street cars and beautifully restored cruisers gathering at Havenstreet Station, creating a fantastic contrast against the backdrop of the historic steam railway. You can get up close to these unique vehicles, chat with owners and enjoy a brilliant mix of motoring heritage and steam railway nostalgia as part of the Bank Holiday celebrations.
Sunday special live entertainment
Round off the May Half Term celebrations with a vibrant Sunday Special at Havenstreet Station on Sunday 31 May. There will be live performances from the incredible Raw Samba Band, bringing energetic beats, carnival rhythms and a lively atmosphere to the Steam Railway. It’s the perfect way to add even more excitement to a family day out, with music and entertainment filling the station throughout the day.
Food, drink and relaxation
Whether you’re stopping for coffee and cake at the Whistle Stop Café or enjoying a hearty meal in the Station Restaurant, there are plenty of options to refuel during your visit. The Steam Railway offers a full day experience, making it easy to spend quality time together while soaking up the atmosphere of a bygone era.

You can also enjoy free entry to Havenstreet Station’s Whistle Stop Café and outdoor playground, making it a great option even if you’re not travelling on the train. It’s the perfect spot to soak up the heritage atmosphere and enjoy a family-friendly day out.
