About
Wight Coast Fossils – National Trust Fossil Walks
Compton Bay is one of the best places in Britain to find fossils and this summer, you can explore it with some of the island’s most knowledgeable guides. Wight Coast Fossils in collaboration with the National Trust offer regular public fossil walks along this remarkable stretch of coastline, running through the school holidays and at select dates throughout the year. These relaxed, hour-long group walks are suitable for all ages and open to National Trust members and non-members alike. Your guide will lead you along the shore, reading the clues in the rocks to tell the story of a landscape transformed over millions of years, from ancient seas to Cretaceous forests. Along the way there’s a real chance to find your own piece of prehistoric history, from fossilised bone, teeth and wood to flint sea urchins. The walk ends at Hanover Point and the famous dinosaur footcasts, undeniable evidence that dinosaurs were here 130 million years ago and still making their mark today.
