Old Thatch Teashop

The Old Thatch was initially built in 1690 as two or three fisherman's cottages and it is believed to be the oldest building in the town of  Shanklin. By 1940, after being used by various other businesses, it was transformed into a traditional Teashop and over the years has developed into the beautiful Teashop you see today. Beneath the Old Thatch is a mysterious tunnel that takes you about 500 meters further on towards Ventnor to the Mead. The tunnel was used by the old-time Fishermen, smugglers & Pirates to hide their contraband and as a get-a-way when Custom & Excise came knocking on the door because, of course, in those days Tourism was not the main source of income for the Island. We have three traditional thatched roofs and they are all water-resistant and warm. Nowadays they are made of reed and last for approximately 35 years. The ridges are made of straw because it bends easily and that is where the Thatcher puts his individual signature. Remember not to stand under a Thatch when it rains as you will notice there is no guttering and you might have a shower that you did not bargain for. We know of no official Ghost BUT there have been many sightings from both Staff and Customers of a beautiful lady who wonders through our rooms checking everything is up to standard.
