As an Island we are proud of the conscientious and responsible actions of our local community, industry and visitors throughout the pandemic, helping to make the Isle of Wight one of the most happy and healthy destinations in the UK.
As we look forward to re-opening the Isle of Wight to visitors, we ask that you are responsible in your planning and adhere to all Government guidelines now and during your stay, as well as all rules put in place by our local businesses to help safeguard you and those around you.
In order to leave a positive footprint on the Island, we please ask that you continue to be considerate and help us to protect everyone wanting to enjoy the Isle of Wight by “Travelling the Wight Way” and abide by all official guidelines in place at this time.
It’s easy to turn your trip to the Isle of Wight into an eco-friendly adventure. Opting for a car-free break will open up hidden footpaths, better views and a more memorable experience of local life. Use these travel planners to help you get to your chosen destination without a car:
Many hotels, B&Bs and tourist attractions across the Island are members of Visit Isle of Wight’s Green Star scheme which tells you that they are part of the campaign to reduce carbon emissions by promoting the use of sustainable transport. Look out for the bronze, silver and gold awards and ask your host how you can make more eco-friendly transport choices during your trip to the Isle of Wight.
The Slow Wight Travel Guide is packed full of itinerary ideas for your car-free trip. Be inspired by our eight routes that will guide you around the Island’s lesser-known spots by train, bus, walking and cycling.
Red Funnel, Wightlink and Hovertravel all provide options for foot passengers to cross the Solent. It’s much cheaper to travel on foot and it is easy to plan your onward journey from the ferry terminal by bus or train.
Travelling by bus on the Island is reliable and convenient as there are colour-coded routes that service all the main towns. The ‘next stop’ announcement screens on-board buses and the incredibly knowledgeable drivers are there to help you find your destination, but if you’d prefer to plan in advance, take a look at the Southern Vectis route planner for door to door route information.
The Isle of Wight is home to the Island Line train which operates from Ryde Pier Head down to Shanklin. Change at Smallbrook Junction and hop onboard the unique island steam train to get to Ashey, Havenstreet or Wootton.
Bringing your bike to the Isle of Wight is easy and free. Wightlink, Red Funnel and Hovertravel are all able to transport bikes but you should check booking requirements in advance. Alternatively, you could hire a bike when you arrive on the Island. Once you’re here, you’ll find hundreds of miles of cycleways and trails to try.

If you arrive on the Isle of Wight via Yarmouth, you will be within walking distance from Yarmouth bus station. If you’re travelling to Cowes or East Cowes you’ll find bus stops right outside the ferry terminals, and passengers travelling to Ryde will have the option to travel by bus or train. The Isle of Wight is a true walkers’ paradise and there are numerous footpaths for you to explore all across the Island.
