Expanding the mind is a great way to enjoy your holiday and what better way than learning a new skill or craft.

The Isle of Wight offers lots of opportunities to expand your horizons, quite literally with an arts course in Freshwater Bay.

Or you could try your hand at mosaics with a residential course in Shanklin.

Then there is Quay Arts, the Isle of Wight’s riverside arts centre which offers a number of art courses for all ages as well as staging exhibitions and concerts (and they have a fab waterfront café).

Of course, learning is not all about the arts so why not visit one of the Island’s “big beast” attractions and find out more about the Island’s past.

Osborne House, the Italianate villa built by Prince Albert for Queen Victoria is packed with incredible paintings, furniture and a sense of the Victorian era. Check out The Swiss Cottage and the gorgeous grounds with a fascinating tree trail to entertain the children.

Or head over to Carisbrooke Castle, the Norman fortification which latterly housed King Charles I prior to his execution. This stunning castle has its own museum with fabulous paintings and artefacts and you can walk the walls and grounds.

The National Trust owns large tracts of the Isle of Wight and if you want to explore the natural wonder of the Island, check out their sites.

Whatever you choose, be sure the Isle of Wight is a wonderful place to open your mind.
