The trail was initiated by the Classic Boat Museum, founded in 1996, as part of its long-term vision to celebrate Cowes' maritime heritage. Working in partnership with the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust, the trail also highlights the history of the Royal Yachts and the Racing Royals that have played such an important role in the town's story.

The Cowes Maritime Heritage trail connects 15 locations across the town, each offering its own insight into the Isle of Wight's outstanding sailing legacy.

Royal Yacht Squadron

Founded in 1815, the Royal Yacht Squadron is regarded as one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in the world. Originally established as 'The Yacht Club', it received Royal status from George IV in 1820 before adopting its current name under William IV in 1833.

You can discover an impressive collection of regatta trophies, maritime paintings and artefacts from HMY Britannia, including objects connected with the famous racing cutter commissioned by Edward VII in 1893. Guided tour on 31 August of the Pavilion and Castle displays provide an opportunity to learn more about the Squadron's remarkable history.

Historic yacht clubs of Cowes

The trail introduces visitors to several of Cowes' distinguished yacht clubs, each with its own important place in sailing history.

The Royal Ocean Racing Club, established in 1925, was created to standardise offshore racing and is recognised for managing the Rolex Fastnet Race. The club celebrated its centenary in 2025.

The Royal Thames Yacht Club, founded in 1775 by the Duke of Cumberland, is the oldest continuously operating yacht club in the world. Alongside the Royal London Yacht Club, visitors can discover historic artefacts connected with HMY Britannia and royal sailing traditions.

The Island Sailing Club, founded in 1889, became known as "The Friendly Club" for its welcoming approach to sailors of all abilities. It is best known as the founder of the prestigious Round the Island Race, first held in 1931 with just 25 starters and now recognised as one of the world's largest yacht races.

The Cowes Corinthian Yacht Club, founded in 1952, continues its tradition of promoting amateur sailing while celebrating the legacy of Paralympic champion Andy Cassell and supporting disability sailing through the Cowes Sailability Club.

Celebrate Cowes Week

No maritime trail through Cowes would be complete without recognising the importance of Cowes Week, one of the world's most famous sailing regattas.

At Regatta House, visitors can explore displays charting over 200 years of Cowes Week and learn how Cowes Week Limited evolved from the Cowes Combined Clubs, bringing together the organisation of this internationally renowned event.

Discover Royal racing heritage

The trail features several locations celebrating the history of Britain's Royal racing yachts.

The Britannia Exhibition at Commodore's House presents "Sailing through Royal History", showcasing the story of the Royal Racing Yachts alongside the famous designer Uffa Fox.

Nearby, K1 Britannia combines a maritime memorabilia shop with a museum displaying fascinating artefacts connected to HMY Britannia.

The Sir Max Aitken Museum offers guided tours featuring remarkable exhibits linked to the Racing Royals, including the tillers from HMY Britannia and the Kaiser's yacht Meteor, together with the gaff from HMY Britannia.

Along The Parade, specially created interpretation panels explore the stories of the Royal Yachts and the Racing Royals through a partnership between the Royal Yacht Britannia Trust and the Classic Boat Museum.

Museums, books and maritime collections

The trail also showcases Cowes' wealth of maritime knowledge and collections.

The Classic Boat Museum celebrates its 30th anniversary while displaying exhibits including Bloodhound's tender, Coweslip, a large half model of HMY Britannia and beautifully crafted model boats built by local model-maker Bill Austin.

At the Cowes Maritime Museum, visitors can continue their exploration of the town's seafaring past, while Cowes Library houses an extensive maritime collection of books, journals and local studies materials covering sailing history from the earliest days of yachting to the present.

The Medina Bookshop offers an outstanding collection of antiquarian maritime books alongside new titles, maritime artwork and sailing-related talks.

Visitors can also stop at the Beckford Centre, home to the Cowes Heritage and Community Group, where displays celebrate many of the yachts that have raced in Cowes over the years.
