The Isle of Wight is a walker’s dream, offering over 500 miles of well-maintained footpaths through spectacular scenery and terrain, making it the perfect place for a walking holiday or break. With footpaths that wind through fields and forests, and round 64 miles of coast paths adjacent to some of the Isle of Wight’s most dramatic coastline and beaches. With a great range of walking routes it is possible to access almost every corner of the Island, including many of our fascinating towns and village. Walking on the Isle of Wight is by far the best way to enjoy one of the UK’s designated areas of outstanding natural beauty.
Isle of Wight Walking Festival
With such a great variety of walks available it is no surprise that the Isle of Wight hosts the largest walking festival in the UK. This event occurs twice a year, once in the Spring and once in the Autumn, with literally hundreds of walks for all ages and abilities, from ghost walks to fire walks and walks with alpacas to speed dating!
The Isle of Wight is world famous for its dinosaur heritage, and there is great selection of organised fossil hunts available for those looking to mix walking with historical exploration. You can also discover more of the Isle of Wight’s landscape and wildlife with the “Histree Trails” and “Estuaries Project Walks” which explore some of the Island’s historical woodland and rivers.
There are many organised guided walks throughout the year with specialist companies such as Wight Walks offering complete packages which include accommodation, taking the stress out of organising your stay and leaving more time for you to relax and enjoy your time on this beautiful Island.
For something a little different those who dare can try a spine-chilling Ghost Walk through some of the Isle of Wight’s most “haunted” spots. These walks take place from Easter to October, and some form part of the Isle of Wight Walking Festival. Numbers on the walks are usually very limited so booking is essential to take part in these walks.
