Wayside Herbs - Herb Garden, Country Crafts and Museum
Isle of Wight

Wayside Herbs is a hidden treasure in rural West Wight, hosting 3 attractions in one, with interest for all the family. They are a celebration of our history of plants and the uses humans have put them to over 20,000 years!
Our herb garden, free to look around, contains over 100 plants used traditionally for medicines, flavourings and other household tasks, including dye plants. For younger visitors there is a section on herbs from Harry Potter with a chance to make their own potions. We have recreated a medieval herbalist’s workshop with quill pen writing.
A large, changing selection of unusual herbs is for sale all year round, on an honesty stall if we are closed.
Visit the Stone Age takes us back to our earliest history, with an indoor recreation of homes from the Ice Age until the dawn of farming, complete with replica and authentic artefacts, most of which can be handled with care. We include recreations of clothes that can be tried on – if you are small enough! A small entrance fee applies to this attraction.
The Woolshed has examples of working looms copied from archaeological finds from the Bronze Age, Roman and early medieval periods, and replicated textiles and clothing from the Bronze Age to Vikings (including a collection of historic Action Men and Barbies). We have a shop selling herbal items and crafts, Stone Age themed gifts, and many items made by Island weavers and spinners, including handspun wool.
We also host occasional textile-based workshops and can organise 1/1 instruction days.
