#97 - Meet the donkeys that power a fortress at Carisbrooke Castle
Animal Collection / Zoo
Isle Of Wight
AboutCarisbrooke Castle has held a king captive and fought off a French invasion but the donkeys are the real stars of the show. Throughout the day, the four-legged residents dutifully draw up water from the Castle’s well by plodding their way around the sixteenth-century tread wheel.
The team of donkeys have names including Jill, Jimbob and Jigsaw as a reminder of the ‘J’ signature used by King Charles I when he wrote letters from his 17th century prison.
Animal fans need not worry - the work is shared out, meaning that the donkeys only ever do a few minutes work each day. And of course they are compensated with endless pampering and attention.
