#92 - Live in luxury in the centre of the Solent at Spitbank Fort
AboutThe ever-ambitious Victorians built four imposing forts in the Solent to protect Portsmouth from French invasion. The Gallic threat never materialised but the forts remained and in recent years they have passed into private hands.
Spitbank Fort, which was the last built, has undergone extensive restoration and renovation and now offers retreats for visitors looking for fascinating history alongside modern luxury.
Guests arrive by speedboat before enjoying an open air hot-tub and a sauna with views of one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.
At night, a four-course dinner is served to visitors, who then retire to one of the fort’s eight bedrooms.
