AboutRabbit's Bothie, a one-bedroom vacation rental in West Wight, is close to areas of outstanding natural beauty (AONBs), sites of special scientific interest (SSIs) and National Trust coastline.
The 19th-century holiday villas, nestled beneath the downs with views to the sea, were rented by Thackeray, Darwin and Dodgson. In the 20th century Freshwater Bay was a favourite of DH Lawrence, TS Eliot, Christopher Isherwood and WH Auden. Today, popular attractions close to the bothy include the thatched-roof church, St Agnes, and the museum of photography at Dimbola Lodge, home of pioneer photographer Julia Margaret Cameron. Sheltered on both sides by soaring white cliffs, the bay has dramatic rocks and a sandy beach at low tide.
Just round the corner from the bothy, there are several hiking trails across Tennyson Down. A four-mile walk brings you to the Needles and the Old Battery, a Victorian fort built in 1862. Nearby are the 20th-century New Battery and rocket test-launch station for communications satellites.
The bus stops for Alum Bay, Freshwater village and the Island capital Newport are just round the corner from Rabbit’s Bothie. The Military Road rises steeply from Freshwater Bay, and provides a spectacular drive or walk along the cliff tops. Compton Bay is popular with surfers and at low tide you can see fossilised logs and dinosaur footprints.
Rabbit’s Bothie helps to promote responsible tourism, rural accommodation and the simple pleasures of walking, cycling, bird watching, sketching and photography. Other popular local activities are horse riding, paragliding, kayaking and paddle boarding.
The holiday cottage is on the ground floor to the rear of the main house and is approached through the owners’ front garden. Rosedale was built in 1877 as one of a collection of officers’ houses next to the parade ground for Fort Redoubt.
All bookings include a welcome pack and free travel for two adults on Island buses with the key travel card from Southern Vectis. This includes the seasonal open-top Needles Breezer and Island Coaster to Ventnor and Shanklin (concession card holders usually have to pay).
Self-catering for two with wifi and washing machine is a tough find.
