Island Explorer provides a tour guide service for visiting groups to the Isle of Wight.

NEW FOR 2014 - Island Explorer are pleased to be able offer tours of the Island in our luxury air-conditioned 16 seat mini-coach. The coach will be operated under contract with Seaview Services Ltd who were one of many private Island operators who ran excursions for holiday makers from Ryde Esplanade in the early 1960's right up to the early 1980's. People who can remember that far back will remember names like Paul's Tours of Ryde and Moss Motor Tours of Sandown. Sadly those days have gone but we at Island Explorer are going to 're-invent' the idea by offering selected tours on a pre-booked basis* to those visitors who want to 'explore' the Island in comfort.

TOURS AVAILABLE:

* Around The Island Tour - (23/01/2014 - 27/09/2014)

If you've never been to the Island before, this is a must day out. The route along the southern coast line of the Island is quite spectacular. * Follies, Smugglers and Ship Wrecks - (01/04/2014 - 23/09/2014)
Palmerston’s Follies was a name given to the group of coastal defences built around the Island during the Victorian period on the recommendations of the 1860 Royal Commission on the Defence of the United Kingdom. The name comes from their association with Lord Palmerston, who was Prime Minister at the time. They were built as a response to a perceived threat of a French invasion which never happened thus making them obsolete and were subsequently known as “follies”. The Island (as you would expect!) was renowned for smuggling years ago... not many of it's inhabitants were un-connected in one way or another with this illicit 'industry'. So we will take you to perhaps the most notorious area where the smugglers operated... Blackgang. This stretch of coast line was also where hundreds of ships met their doom as the waters along here are littered with shallow reefs and ledges. We show you the final resting place of some of the victims of perhaps the most infamous wrecks here... the Clarendon. Departs from near the hovercraft footbridge on Ryde Esplanade.

* Historical Newtown Maritime Explorer – (03/04/2014 - 25/09/2014)
One of the earliest settlements on the Island was Newtown. The town began to develop in the 1300's and by 1344 it became a thriving commercial centre partly because the natural harbour was considered to be the safest. There was a prosperous salt works and the area was famous for it's abundant oyster beds. In 1584 Elizabeth 1st awarded Newtown 2 parliamentary seats and the town hall was built in the 17th century but this made the town one of the most notorious of the 'rotten boroughs'. But we first head for the sailing world's capital town which hosts the world's biggest annual sailing event... Cowes. Departs every Thursday from near hovercraft foot bridge on Ryde Esplanade (Except June 12th and September 4th).
