Activities

A range of both indoor and outdoor activities exist locally ensuring fun for all the family. Ryde Golf Course is located in a beautiful tranquil setting, just a 7-minute drive of the Retro Staycations site and welcomes golfers of all ages and levels of expertise.

Ryde has a lido-style 25m pool with a retractable roof surrounded by windows and right next to the beach.

From recreational tree climbing to go-karting, tenpin bowling and laser quest, there’s plenty to do in the local area, with lots more besides in neighbouring towns and villages. Nothing’s too far away on the Isle of Wight!

Golden Sand Beaches

The Isle of Wight has an incredible range of stunning beaches, from wide sandy shorelines to rolling cliffs and awe-inspiring coastal views.

Ryde’s famous beaches have soft sand and plenty of space, particularly at low tide when the tide goes out over half a mile – almost to the end of the pier. In Summer the tide laps in over the hot sand, and the water is some of the warmest on the Island.

Behind the beach there is a large boating lake, lush green park with children’s adventure playground and every amenity a beach-goer could wish for.

Isle of Wight Heritage Railway

The Island’s award-winning heritage railway runs within 500m of our site! You will be able to hear the whistle of the steam train as it passes by. If you’d like to hop on board, Havenstreet Station is located only 2.5 miles away by car and offers a superb day out for all ages.

When travelling in one of the trains painstakingly restored carriages with their polished brass handles, gleaming woodwork and immaculate hand-made upholstery, you’ll be transported back to the romantic age of steam.

Isle of Wight Bus & Coach Museum

This free to attend museum, situated close to Ryde town centre, houses an impressive collection of Island buses and coaches which once ran on the Island.

The Museum has a display of around 20 historic vehicles dating back to 1927 through to more recent examples, as well as fascinating transport artefacts, displays, photographs, a tea bar and a shop, it’s the perfect place to lose yourself in local transport history.

Quarr Abbey

You can see Quarr Abbey from the car ferry to Fishbourne, nestling among the trees on the shore. Passengers visiting the Island enjoy taking various guesses at what it could be.

Quarr Abbey is a working Benedictine monastery set in peaceful surroundings and can be found just outside of Ryde. This stunning Grade I listed building boasts beautiful grounds, including a walled garden, visitor centre, tea shop, art gallery and monastery shop. There’s a free family trail where visitors can discover the special nature of a site that is a haven for rare wildlife and plants.

Osborne House

When it comes to homes on the Isle of Wight, you won’t find one more famous than Osborne House, owned by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, before her death there in 1901.

After first visiting Osborne, Queen Victoria wrote: ‘It is impossible to imagine a prettier spot.’

Still presented as a family home, this former royal residence still retains a large collection of the couple’s possessions, artwork and photographs. Visit their private apartments including the Queen’s bedroom, nursery rooms and royal bathrooms and delight in Victorian opulence and extravagant interiors.
